Strategic Thinking While Learning in Public

My context-gathering framework to supercharge learning in Developer Relations

Reflecting on my past year as a Developer Advocate at Unleash, I appreciate the nuanced art and science of Developer Relations. My journey continues to be a learning experience that I believe can provide valuable insights for other DevRel professionals looking to channel their energy to make a meaningful impact.

Laying the Foundations of Developer Relations

Earlier in my DevRel journey, I was inspired by Sam Julien's framework from Getting Started in Developer Relations. This framework outlines four critical pillars of DevRel: Awareness, Education, Feedback, and Community. These aren't just theoretical concepts—they're guideposts shaping my approach to connecting with developers and technical decision-makers.

Kurtis Kemple, Senior Director of Developer Relations at Slack, articulates this beautifully, emphasizing that DevRel is fundamentally about gathering context – both internal and external – to create alignment and establish a continuous feedback loop that addresses developer pain points.

My Developer Relations Context-Gathering Framework

So, how am I operationalizing these principles? By diving deep into four key areas of learning:

1. Product Mastery: Understanding Unleash's feature flag platform inside and out. This meant not just knowing the technical specifications but truly grasping how our solution solves real-world engineering challenges.

2. Customer Understanding: Developing a crystal-clear picture of our Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). Who are the Directors of Engineering and CTOs struggling with release management and feature rollout complexity? Who are the developers tasked with writing code and implementing feature flags to build and release features confidently? What are the relevant technology stacks customers need to be supported to use your product effectively?

3. Market Positioning: Deeply exploring the feature flag market landscape – understanding our unique value proposition and how we differentiate from other solutions.

4. Industry Context: Broadening my perspective to understand how feature flags fit into larger trends in DevOps, DevSecOps, etc.

Each pillar builds upon the others, creating a comprehensive view that allows me to communicate more effectively with developers, provide meaningful education, and gather feedback. Address these pillars as you see fit to execute Sam Julien and Kurt Kemple’s principles of Developer Relations/Experience.

At its core, Unleash is about making developers' lives easier. By taking this holistic approach, I'm directly supporting our mission to empower developers and align closely with Unleash's product goals. This means translating technical capabilities into tangible value for our customers.

To my fellow DevRel professionals: embrace continuous learning, be curious, and ask questions. Build bridges between your product, customers, and the broader industry trends.

What learning strategies have worked for you in your DevRel journey? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
